The much-anticipated winter collection from Nepenthes sub brand is finally here, but before we look into the collection, it’s important to understand where Needles all started and how this criminally understated brand has become a go-to for the elevated streetwear world finding it’s way into A$AP Rocky’s wardrobe staples.

Keizo Shimizu, Needles founder, initially worked for Japanese powerhouse Nepenthes, where he sourced vintage Americana and American military surplus apparel to coincide with the store’s frequent offering of brands including L.L. Bean, New Balance and Ralph Lauren. Shimizu spent a lot of his time in America sourcing these pieces using his “sense of smell” to track down deadstock pieces that supported the brand’s heavy influence from westernised film, music and fashion culture simultaneously.

As time went on, Nepenthes expanded from their store in Japan to the states. Due to many of these American factories outsourcing their production lines across the globe, sourcing became more and more difficult for Shimizu, leading to the birth of Needles in 1997 to support Nepenthes as an in-store brand.

Shimizu’s first collection for Needles featured one item, an oversized suit inspired by Miles Davis’s suit that he was frequently documented wearing in the 60s. From here, the brand went from strength to strength, drawing inspiration from classic Americana with a butterfly logo taken from Steve McQueen’s bold chest tattoo in the film Papillion. Heritage archive pieces, classic sportswear and even the birth of Grunge in 90s Seattle were all taken into account, applying both western and Japanese silhouettes and fabrics, creating pieces that were as versatile as they were premium.

In the last few years, the Papillion logo has been worn by celebrities including Jack Harlow, Tyga and to a greater extent A$AP Rocky, whose brand AWGE collaborated with the Japanese brand due to A$AP’s adoration for their Poly Smooth tracksuit, a two piece that’s since become synonymous with the brand. Needles are changing the way tracksuits are considered in modern-day fashion, seen as more of a statement of luxury than something to wear before and after sports.

The winter collection boasts some beautifully made and creatively designed pieces, including the classic Poly Smooth tracksuit in two tasteful colourways, with a choice of regular fit and wide-leg bottoms, a bold and more subtle colourway of a super soft Mohair Cardigan, a short-sleeve checked shirt with unzippable panels, the oversized and military-inspired H.D. Pants and many more.
