To celebrate the opening of our new Birmingham store on 29/07/2022, we’re honoured to have DJ and producer Jossy Mitsu in the mix showcasing some tunes that have helped influence and shape her path as an artist, with some homegrown talent as well as featuring some of her own heaters that are firing up dances across the UK and Europe, including Glastonbury, Dekmantel and the Warehouse Project to name but a few.
Jossy (AKA Jocelyn M) was born in Birmingham to parents of Ghanaian and Dutch heritage, and began her musical journey at the age of 15, attending dance classes that featured left-field electronic music in their playlists, being an avid Rinse FM and Radio 1 listener and having a penchant for such labels as Clek Clek Boom, Hessle Audio and Hyperdub. The Birmingham club scene helped push Jossy’s musical taste further, with frequent garage, bass house, and 140bpm raves based in legendary venues like Rainbow and further afield.
At the age of 18, Jossy naturally progressed into DJing on a set of Stanton turntables borrowed from a friend with a collection of second-hand house and garage records, moving on to Serato allowing her to experiment with different genres and BPMs. She then moved to London in order to study Biology at UCL, meeting other dance music fanatics whilst working at the cloakroom in legendary club Fabric where she has since held a residency (as well as Rinse FM).
Jossy was also a founding member of the London-based 6 Figure Gang, a DJ supergroup including Sherelle, Yazzus, Fauzia and Dobby who drunkenly formed the collective after a group motive to see Jossy play. The group have bonded over their experiences of pushing their own individual sounds as women in a still underground scene, focusing on bass-heavy sets including everything from 2-step garage, footwork, jungle, 140bpm and nostalgic classics to keep the night going.
The mix Jossy has created for us has an amazing blend of tunes with the vibe of Birmingham seeping through from start to finish, spanning across a ton of genres showing her versatility and undeniable talent.
Wellgosh love.
