Long-standing collaborators, adidas Originals and Parley announce their latest mission to raise awareness of the devastating spread of plastics throughout our ecosystem, now found as far afield as the glacier water from the highest of peaks on earth.

Adidas call upon their Ultramarathon athlete, Timothy Olson, to highlight the issue. Timothy will attempt to run the entire 2,653-mile Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in record time. With the current record set at 53 days, 6 hours, and 37 minutes, he will aim to run over 50 miles a day for 50 days. The run will take him from Mexico to Canada via the Californian coastline, where Olson will endure temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 30 degrees Celsius, experiencing weather conditions from all four seasons as the route takes him from mountains to the ocean and everything in between.

“I think a lot of people don’t realise how bad the problem has gotten. My training takes me to some seriously remote places, and I’m always shocked to find plastic waste even in the smallest of corners”, said Timothy Olson, adidas Ultramarathon athlete. “But what’s even more alarming is how plastic is now being found in glacier water at the tops of mountains thanks to microplastics which are carried there from the ocean via rainwater. I want to use my PCT record attempt as a platform to help educate people about this new problem and inspire them to start making small steps towards the solution which can make a big difference – if we all work together.”

With a call to arms made and Timothy on board, adidas link up with Parley once more to introduce a new sustainable outdoor collection made with Parley Ocean Plastic, empowering, encouraging and educating people to join the fight against plastic waste but also to illustrate what’s possible when likeminded corporations put their mind to it.

Speaking about this mission for the oceans, Parley for the Oceans founder, Cyrill Gutsch said,

“The global plastic waste crisis has reached mission critical. It’s now everywhere on the planet – in the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe. With adidas, we’ve made good progress since 2015, intercepting plastic waste from shorelines and upcycling it to create 30 million pairs of shoes. We will continue our plight for the oceans, but we’re now calling on everyone to join the fight. Over the next few years, we will be activating a series of missions for the oceans – just like this one – and we hope that everyone will join us, as only together can we end plastic waste.”

Made with Parley Ocean Plastic; upcycled marine plastic waste that is intercepted from remote islands, beaches and coastal communities, each piece of the collection is crafted with functionality and protecting the planet at its core. Key pieces include the FreeHiker Parley, a funtional long distance trail shoe designed for comfort, grip and durability over a gradual ascent, and the MyShelter Parley, a lightweight, breathable and fully waterproof jacket ideal for a fast-pace environment where the weather moves as quickly at the wearer.
