A week has passed & Gary Aspden is up to his old tricks again. Last week he teased us with the forthcoming AW20 Spezial Chapter 1 range, & now he’s dropped imagery of Chapter 2, a tight capsule collection with the iconic Manchester band New Order.
You might know New Order best for True Faith or Blue Monday, but this is a band with a rich, & at times sad history, & a band with such staunch stoicism surrounding their independence & art that many of today’s musicians should be in awe of. This said, a collaboration with one of the worlds largest sportswear companies could be perceived as going against their core ideals. However, with a man like Gary Aspden at the helm of Spezial; a curated project for adidas Originals which celebrates the cultural significance of the brand’s heritage within certain subculture (of which New order definitely resides), their is an authenticity to this project like no other.
Gary has been a good friend & a fan of New Order since the hazy days of the late 80s, & it was this friendship & admiration for the group that formed the foundation of the proposal to work together on the range. In return, frontman Bernard Sumner (along with many other bands from the north of England) has an affinity with adidas, & is known for wearing a pair of white adidas kicks as his go-to ‘stage shoe of choice’.
The collection comprises of:
A piece of outerwear; a jacket that celebrates Sumner’s love of sailing, featuring distinctive transparent hood paneling usually found on yachting jackets.

A track-top that marries up with this season’s Spezial Tapered Track Pant.

A football top that is a nod to the band’s cultural relevance within the beautiful game.

A t-shirt featuring the capsule’s name on the chest and a graphic print on the back that runs throughout the range.

A revamp of the Wilsy SPZL; Sumner’s favourite Spezial trainer to date & a nod to his love of white kicks!
